A still shot from a motion piece. A mesh 'mask' forms around the figure. This mesh isn't always in synch with the figure and distorts yet always remains. Restrictive. The distortion may be subtle at times but it always remains.
The models were textured in Cinema4d, the distortion acheived through plane effectors. The scene was composed in After Effects and assembled in Premier.
An early experimental still for a motion piece. Distorting the external mesh 'mask' over an underlying model.
The models were textured in Cinema4d, the distortion acheived through plane effectors.
A still shot from a motion piece. I animated the figure to respond to a blow using a Mixam animation. A little motion blur was added in After Effects afterwards.

A Fictional User Interface (FUI) piece using a still from a motion piece.
The models were created in Cinema4d, the distortion acheived through plane effectors. The image was then created in Photoshop.
I saw this style of diagram/chart in an Archaeology text book and thought it would make an interesting data presentation for a Fictional User Interface (FUI).
The assets were built in Illustrator and brought into Photoshop.
Playing with callouts - the relationship between image and text. This FUI piece is loosely based on neurology. The idea of connections in the brain, the callouts presenting the monitored reactions.
The 3d image was created in Cinema4d and brought into Photoshop for manipulation.
Exploring the relationship between image and graphs. I was inspired by this kind of data presentation and how it work with imagery to form a fictional data design/user interface.

A still from a music visualiser.
This uses Cinema4d's sound effector. The piece of music for this particular still was one I created myself in Garage Band.
Inspired by a physical dial I saw, I decided to create a digital version.

The dial assets were created in Illustrator and then brought into Photoshop for manipulation.

Giving in to my love of physical, analogue control panels of all kinds, whether they be those found in music mixing decks or nuclear reactors, I 'digitised' some found examples.
The assets were created in Illustrator and composed and manipulated in Photoshop.
A big fan of 2001, I decided to pay a little homage to HAL after visiting the Kubrik exhibition in London. It was fantastic to be able to stand for ages in front of the HAL graphics and really study them.
My Reebok treadmill inspired the style for the assets.
The assets were created in Illustrator and composed and manipulated in Photoshop.
I'd been thinking about how our true self is surrounded by layers of 'protection' and how we appear differently depending on the person we are with. These layers are even different depending on what aspect of ourselves is present. I explored this initially with a 2d sketch and then wanted to create a 3d example, whilst trying to maintain an organic feel. Translucent layers are built around a core of light and the fewer the layers, the brighter the core.
Built in Cinema4d.
Still from a motion piece.
Inspired by Ted Chiang’s beautiful story, ‘The Great Silence’ which describes the Arecibo Message. This is my visualisation of the seven part message (that was originally broadcast in 1974 from the Arecibo Radio Telescope and aimed towards star cluster M13). Lots to work on, but played with 3D, cameras & lighting in AfterEffects plus had a crack at creating the sound/music myself.
HUD design, assets created in Illustrator and composed in Photoshop.
Still from a sound visualiser. I used my own music to generate the visualiser using the Sound Effector in Cinema4d. Composed in After Effects.

Inspired by one of the exhibits at the CERN exhibition.

Still from a motion piece. Experimenting with tables in 3D, how columns of interest might be brought into greater focus.
Created in After Effects.
Concept piece, exploring form, texturing and lighting in Cinema4d. Composed in After Effects.
Fictional UI experiment. Background image created in Cinema4d, vector assets created in Illustrator and composed in Photoshop.

Game UI concept design.
Models created in Cinema4d, composed in Photoshop.
One of a series of images I created capturing scenes from MR James' Ghost Stories. This one is inspired by 'Canon Alberic's Scrapbook'.
I set myself this project in order to learn modelling, texturing and lighting in Cinema4d.
Modelled, textured and lit in Cinema4d, composed in Photoshop.
Images created as part of Learn Squared's 'UI and Data Design for Film' course by Ash Thorp. For this image, I drew inspiration from deep beneath the ocean for reference material.

Created in After Effects.
Exploring the relationship between image and text with the theme of distotion, noise and displacement.

Inspired by the markings on the undercarraige of an aeroplane, I drew the basic diagram in Illustrator and brought it into Photoshop to compose.
